In the fall, it displays a blaze of bright, crimson red.

‘Emperor I’ — 24', PALMATUM, red. An exceptional cultivar that is a must for those needing a tough Japanese Maple. The very dark red leaf lasts throughout the season; in fall the leaves turn a fiery crimson.

Slow growing twiggy stems bear two forms of foliage, a characteristic often seen and enjoyed in Acer palmatum. This is a medium sized tree with short twiggy growth. In the fall the spectacular gold leaves are a special treat. This tree grows 6-12" a year.

acer palmatum ‘Japanese Sunrise’

'Kamagata’ —2-5', DWARF, green. One of the most fabulous introductions of all the palmatums, ‘Kamagata’ is a variety of A. palmatum selected by J. D. Vertrees. It is diminutive and bush-like in growth habit but in an open manner, creating a very small tree with the distinct branching usually found only on upright tree forms. Add to this green leaves with red margined detail. Though a dwarf cultivar, it grows vigorously when young. It’s tolerant of full sun and dry conditions. Spectacular orange-red leaves in autumn. Excellent for bonsai.

It achieves new glory in the fall with a deep bronze at tip ends fading to a shining golden yellow--a very intriguing selection!

'Koto-no-ito’ — 12', LINEARILOBUM, green. Five, narrow lobes of rich green color make up the foliage of this cultivar, close to the linear-leaf form of palmatum. Usually 1-2" in length, leaves appear on mature wood and small twigs. New leaves unfold with crimson tones but soon turn green. Although an upright growing tree, it does not exceed 10'. The bark is bright green. Fall colors range through various shades of yellow.

"Murasaki Kiyohime"--- 3', DWARF, green. A very choice selection for bonsai, the leaves are tiny, and the habit is more inclined to form a good central leader than most of the yatsubusa types. A small tree, it also tends to make a smooth transition where the graft is made. Basically indistinguishable from Murasaki hime.

acer palmatum "Murasaki Kiyohime"

‘Okushimo’ — 24', PALMATUM, green. Small leaves are sharply pointed at each lobe tip. An unusual effect is created by upward curling leaf edges. ‘Okushimo’ is an upright growing, vase shaped tree. If they do, just remove them. A beauty for any garden!

‘Red Dragon’ — 5-8', DISSECTUM, red. This introduction from Duncan and Davies in New Zealand by Graham Roberts is vigorous and has the weeping habit typical of dissectum varieties. Eventual height depends on how high you stake this beautiful weeper. The leaves are deeper purple-red than ‘Crimson Queen’ or ‘Everred’, and hold their color well, turning crimson in the fall. More dwarf than ‘Crimson Queen’

acer palmatum ‘Red Dragon’

‘Red Pygmy’ — 5-10',LINEARILOBUM , red. Introduced in Holland, this cultivar of the linearlobum group won an Award of Merit in 1969. Leaves are composed of very narrow strap like lobes. Old plants broaden in shape on this densely branched cultivar. Summer color is green red, with a wonderful golden color in the fall. Delightful!

acer palmatum ‘Red Pygmy’

‘Sagara nishiki’ — 5-10', PALMATUM, variegated. The variegated foliage of this small tree is striking. Golden markings are scattered on the green leaves in the spring. Semi-shade will protect the lovely colors during the summer. Slow growing.

'Seiryu’ — 20', DISSECTUM, green. ‘Seiryu’ is the only upright growing tree among the dissectum cultivars. Finely divided, small light green leaves become a veritable palette of red, pink, mauve, gold, and orange in the fall, varying from year to year with weather conditions. The tree has good form and is very densely branched.

acer palmatum 'Seiryu’

‘Sharp’s Pygmy’ — 2-5', DWARF, green. A very nice compact, slow growing dwarf cultivar which needs no pruning and looks like a natural bonsai. The tiny green leaves on this small, bushy tree turn deep crimson in the fall. This ribbon leaf is a fine addition to collections.

‘Shigitatsu sawa’ — 10-15', AMOENUM, variegated. Intricately patterned green veins in yellow-green foliage. The contrast is most noticeable in spring and summer and will hold well in partially shaded areas. In fall, this vigorous small tree has red and green tones. A perfect choice for container growing! Compact growing, it’s a special plant for your garden that will bring many positive comments.

‘Shin deshojo’ — 12', PALMATUM, green. Flaming crimson-scarlet leaves in the spring are the outstanding feature of this maple. Very similar to ‘Bonfire’ and ‘Deshojo’ but more dwarf in stature and brighter in color. Forms a shrub twice as wide as high. Perfect for container planting on a patio.

‘Shishigashira’ — 18', PALMATUM, green. syn. ‘Cristatum’ or ‘Ribesifolium’. A most unusual, slow growing form with small, curly, leaves are densely set close to the stems. "Skeeter’s Broom’ — 2-5', DWARF, red. A sport of ‘Bloodgood’, the new growth on this Witches Broom starts out bright red. As the seasons change, it progresses from burgundy to green, and finally, to a rich bronze. Leaves are deeply lanced.

acer palmatum "Skeeter’s Broom’

‘Toyama nishiki’ — 5-10', DISSECTUM, variegated. A variegated dissectum with leaves showing base coloration of purple-red to greenish-red painted rather haphazardly throughout with creamy-white to pink. Some leaves do not have variegation; others are mottled pink when they come out, white as they mature. The variations on the theme are endless, and the same tree will show differing color patterns from one year to the next. The leaves are more strongly colored when grown in the shade; and because this tree sunburns easily, a shady site is preferred. Keep young trees staked. Rare!

‘Trompenburg’ — 24', MATSUMURAE, red. A magnificent cultivar from Trompenburg Arboretum in Holland. Deep purple-red leaves that have narrow lobes that are slightly rolled under. This is a most attractive effect that develops as the tree ages, not occurring the first few seasons. Upright and open, this tree makes a most beautiful specimen that will be the delight of any garden.

acer palmatum ‘Trompenburg’

‘Ukigumo’ — 5-10', PALMATUM, variegated. The name means “floating clouds,” and it is a fitting description of this fine maple. It has green base leaf color, with “floating clouds” of white and pink mixed into the green. Often the edges of the leaf are pink, giving the plant a soft and beautiful appearance. It is important to note that the amount of variegation will vary greatly from year to year, plant to plant, site to site. Place where it receives enough shade to prevent burning of the leaves. This is not a rapidly growing plant, but it eventually becomes a multibranched, shrubby small tree.
